    THE OPPORTUNITY

     

    Metroland West's Halton Division is seeking an energetic and experienced Reporter to join its fast-paced multimedia Newsroom in Burlington, which publishes the Burlington Post, Milton Canadian Champion and Oakville Beaver. The successful candidate will live and breathe news with a particular interest in local people and issues and be both knowledgeable and passionate about upholding the principles of ethical journalism in the information age.

     

    KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

    • Generate fresh and interesting story ideas with a digital-first perspective.
    • Write tight news stories and community features to be showcased in print and on multimedia platforms.
    • Maintain a strong social media presence to build personal brand and mine for unique story leads.
    • Employ data journalism as a means of telling stories in an impactful way.
    • Explore alternate story forms, online and in print, for maximized reader engagement.
    • Post content to website and social media on daily basis.
    • Must be well-versed in Canadian Libel Law and Canadian Press Style.
    • Other duties as assigned.

     

    WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

    • Degree or Diploma in Journalism.
    • Must have exceptional writing and reporting skills.
    • A motivated self-starter who is an innovative and energetic journalist with the ability to write clean copy and take photos.
    • Have experience working in a newsroom environment and be able to adhere to tight deadlines.
    • Experience with diverse range of content from hard news to food and events reporting
    • Experience in municipal affairs reporting.
    • Have strong interview and communication skills, with the ability to establish strong community relationships.
    • Proven news judgment and a strong work ethic.
    • Possess strong skills in online journalism including social media.
    • Experience with SEO headline writing and the ability to write an engaging social media post.
    • Effective organizational skills, ability to manage time and prioritize tasks appropriately.
    • Must be prepared to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekend.
    • Must have access to a vehicle and a valid Driver’s Licence.
